Topaz was appointed by St Albans City Council to oversee both the design and management of their prestigious Verulamium Spa, part of the new £25m Westminster Lodge leisure development in the heart of the city.
The City’s heritage and the historical importance of the spa’s location was recognized from the outset. A unique spa concept worthy of the City’s Roman past was developed which reflects the original bath house principles and incorporated key elements of this tradition.
Prior to creating the design concept, both national and local research of the spa market was undertaken to ensure the Verulamium Spa reflected current best practice. The result was a mix of modern thermal facilities including a kelo sauna and aroma steam room alongside connecting suite of Roman hot rooms with varying temperatures typical of traditional Roman spa baths.
